"I am always on top" is a portrait of a grandmother who goes on a journey from her cosey living room to sunny Gran Canaria Island. Accompanied by her daughter and grand child, the filmmaker, the old lady has to fight her way through a fruit and vacation paradise. Affectionately, the film shows different parts of her personality; a lust for life, wisdom of age and the fact that „fortune favours fools“ are mixing up with what is the typical education for a german generation of the 10th und 20ies of the 20th century: The autoritarian protestant education which we know of by the film „the white ribbon“ is not only the engine that drives the life of the old woman, but also of her daughter and still takes influence on the grand child. An unbreakable lust for life finds it’s way that has a far side: Never to show weakness, and never to give up, because where I am is top!
