The 5th Award Ceremony took place on December 17, 2008 at the International House of Japan located in Tokyo. We had over 550 submissions for the 5th Movie Festival from more than 50 countries worldwide. The quality of the movies submitted was exceptional and the CON-CAN International Jury members had an extensive debate during the conference that decided the Grand Prix, Tamashii and Special Mention (since the final judging process was tough all the way throughout, we have decided to bestow a ‘Special Mention’ award) awards.
Approximately 100 guests attended the award ceremony, including movie-industry related professionals, sponsors, embassy personnel, press, other prestigious individuals, and staff members. CON-CAN Chairman Masahiro Yoshino, International Jury member Kitaro Kanematsu and Preliminary Jury member Katsuhiko Sugihara presented awards to each award winner. The Grand Prix award was presented to Cagla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti from France, director of “Ata” and the Tamashii award was presented to Hervé Demers from Canada, director of “On Earth as It Is in Heaven”. Unfortunately, due to schedule conflicts, Carla Mota (Tamashii award winner and director of “Chain Gestures - Gestos em Cadeia”) and Baek Seung Hoon (Special Mention award winner and director of “DUCK&GOOSE”) were unable to attend the Award Ceremony.
In addition to the presentation of the awards, the Grand Prix movie, “Ata” was screened for the first time in Japan and was enjoyed by all the guests. Furthermore, we were blessed enough to have the Counselor of the Embassy of Turkey and a delegate from the Embassy of France to each give a brief speech congratulating the awarded directors. Apart from the Award Ceremony, with the cooperation of Panasonic (Studio DU), a special project with the Grand Prix directors (Cagla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti) took place. During the span of 4 days, directors Cagla and Guillaume filmed a short documentary at multiple locations in Tokyo and worked with many staff members from Studio DU. This was a challenging project for CON-CAN because of the tight schedule but the filming went successfully and the two directors expressed what a great experience it was to work with the local staff in Japan.
