On Seeing The 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning

This film is based on Murakami Haruki's short story "On seeing the 100% perfect girl one beautiful April morning." Combining relaxed narration with sedate jazz, it carefully recreates Murakami's world.

This is terrible filmmaking. Don't ever touch a great story again.

Read a novel and see it in your head is one thing. Putting it on screen is a different matter. Sadly I am very disappointed with this film.

I have not read Murakami's book but the movie did strike a chord with me, the music and the editing is spot on, the story is valid and if Tom makes it a little short i think it would work better. Nonetheless a very good movie and i am sure Tom has matured a lot since this attempt. There are not doubts that the next ones are going to be excellent!
Definitely 5 Stars!!

Sadly I don't agree with people who say you've captured the essence of Murakami's story. Firstly as has already been said the girl's red hair makes her too striking to fit the description in the monologue.

However I think more seriously wrong with the adpatation is the sentimentality about Japan that just isn't in Murakami's earlier works and it's definitely not there in this short story. The long opening shots of Tokyo drag, and when he's talking of taking her to a woody allen film you show them at a temple. Murakami's work is filled with a sentimentality for western culture, not Japanese and I think the director's own love of Japan has kind of ruined that feel.

Finally, I think the last big problem is length. The original story is short and sweet but over 30 minutes it just feels like a simple point dragged out way beyond bearable.

I'm sorry to be so negative as I'd love to see some great adaptations of Murakami's work I just feel this short misses the mark and loses all the magic.

Overall very enjoyable, nice shots and decent music selection. However the intro was a bit too long.
This said I felt it was a good adaptation of Murakami's work.
